Chapter 18

As Cassie neared Sebastian’s house she noticed a red pickup truck parked out front. A moment later, Bo stepped out of the house, followed by Sebastian.

“Thanks bud, I’ll catch you tomorrow.” Bo waved to him, then headed toward his truck.

Cassie met Sebastian’s eyes as he reached the edge of the porch.

“Cassie.” He smiled as he descended the steps. “I will never get over how beautiful you are.”

“Sebastian!” Cassie’s cheeks burned as Bo started his truck. “You’re too sweet to me.”

“Am I?” Sebastian cupped her cheek as he looked into her eyes. “I only tell the truth. How’d you know I was thinking of you?”

“I doubt that, you were hanging out with Bo.” Cassie smiled.

“Actually, we were talking about you.” Sebastian chuckled. “Come inside, I’ve got some tea on the stove.”

“Great, I could use something to calm my nerves. Please don’t tell me it’s herbal, though, after the encounter I had at Jackie’s shop today, I’m not sure that would settle me down.”

“What were you doing at her place?” Sebastian narrowed his eyes. “You shouldn’t have been there.”

“What? Why not?” Cassie followed Sebastian inside the house. “I needed to ask her questions about June’s disappearance.”

“This is why you need to talk to me.” Sebastian poured some water from the teapot into a mug and set it down on the counter. As he dropped a tea bag into the mug he looked over at her. “I could have told you that you shouldn’t go there, especially not alone.”

“I don’t understand, is it because of those rumors about her being able to cast spells?” Cassie laughed. “Sebastian, I know you don’t believe in nonsense like that.”

“No, I don’t.” Sebastian carried the two mugs to the table. “But that’s not my concern with Jackie. I think she’s been hiding something.”

“What do you mean?” Cassie sipped her tea as she studied him.

“She asked me to repair some damage to a baseboard and move some shelves last month. When I did, I heard her on the phone a few times, whispering, sounding secretive. She seemed nervous. Then when I arrived one day and went into the shop she wasn’t there. I was about to start working when I heard her talking to someone in the back of the shop. I didn’t see who it was. She obviously didn’t know I was there yet and when she came back into the shop, by herself, she saw me and she seemed to panic. I asked her if she was okay, and she said that of course she was and that I shouldn’t be so nosy and she kicked me out.” Sebastian shook his head. “She went from being grateful one second, to furious the next.”

Cassie recalled the way Jackie reacted when she almost opened a curtain in the shop. “Did you tell Ollie about it?”

“As a rule I try not to get the police involved unless I’m certain there’s a need.” Sebastian winced. “Besides, I didn’t even see who she was speaking to. I really didn’t hear what she was saying, it might have been nothing.
